Apart from celebrated cultural events, such as the Adelaide Festival and Adelaide Fringe, the city also hosts a number of major sporting extravaganzas, including the Santos Tour Down Under, a key event on the UCI World Tour, and Clipsal 500, one of the biggest and most colourful motorsport events in Australia; Holden, Ford, Volvo, Nissan and Mercedes will all field teams in 2016. Every January some of the world’s greatest professional cyclists descend on Adelaide for the Santos Tour Down Under. This curtain raiser for A packed program of sporting events and major arts festivals ensures that Adelaide is always alive, no matter when you visit. the UCI season attracts over 780,000 spectators and ushers in a busy couple of months for the city. In 2016 Adelaide will play host to three other major sporting events; the Australian Deaf Games, the World Dragon Boat Championships and the Australian Swimming Championships. The latter will also be the selection trials for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The arts calendar for 2016 is equally exciting, with the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and WOMADelaide all returning in 2016 with new programs and attractions. Adelaide Fringe is now one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the world and consists of four weeks of around 900 events that are held in parks, warehouses, shops and laneways across the city. Other stand-out events include the OzAsia Festival, which attracts leading artists from the Asia-Pacific region, and the annual South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA), a platform for the state’s painters, sculptors, photographers, jewellers, ceramicists and other artists. Food-lovers won’t want to miss Tasting Australia, one of Australia’s most anticipated culinary festivals, now an annual event and for the kids, the Credit Union Christmas Pageant in November is a tradition not to be missed with over 60 floats and more than 170 performers.
